Provision of student Scholarships from Government as well as from College Fund

Context

Basically, higher education in this region of India is considered to be luxury of life. Most of the people can’t afford to enable their wards to get higher education due to social barriers and poor financial condition. The Government has come out with a great deal of student scholarship and other financial help to large number of students to enable them to get higher education for the upliftment of the society. The college acts as mediator between the Government and students in getting the financial help as offered by the State Government in form of Scholarship and others. But we feel that such support from Government level alone is not sufficient. Multi dimensional poverty on the way of higher education may not be eradicated only by such Government level initiatives. Observing that section of students who are not belonging under the umbrella of Government level support mechanism but poor, college made an effort to identify and support them from its own fund in terms of Half/Full waiver of college tuition fee and by a provision of Students' Aid Fund.

Objective of the practice

  • To provide support to the needy and meritorious students.
  • To remove financial barrier for the learners on the way of higher education.
  • To identity the students who are not obtaining any Government provided scholarships but actually need some kind of support.
  • To understand those students expectation and comprehend them about the availabilities.

Practice

The college always tries to remove the financial barriers of the financially poor and needy students by enabling them to get full fee and half fee scholarship from the college fund. Moreover, the poor students who do not get government’s scholarship are entitled to get Students Aid Fund from the college every year.

The Government level financial support for Girls student upto the age of 18 years are entitled to get Rs. 25,000/- one time scholarship under the name Kanyashree Prakalpa (K2). Secondly all the Boys and Girls students who passed class XII with atleast 80% marks or more are also entitled to get Swami Vivekananda Merit cum Means
Scholarship (SVMCM) amounting to Rs. 12,000/- p.a. throughout the course period. Under the Post Matric Scholarship of the Government, SC/ST/OBC scholarship are also provided to the students through the college-initiative. Minority students of the college are also given a financial support by the Government every year. Last but not the least, a National Scholarship is also provided to the students who fulfill the basic criteria of the scholarship through the college initiative.

As a mediator, the college publicizes the information of Government Scholarship and the other in a large scale through digital platform, banners and notice board to enable the poor and needy students to be aware of the availability of the financial help and Government Scholarship.

After screening of all the application seeking scholarship and financial help, the college forward the applications to the concerned authority for their perusal.

The full and half fee scholarship from the college is made available to the students who secure first division and second division respectively in class XII. The college provides financial support, under the head of ‘Students Aid Fund’ to the leftover poor students who do not get any financial support from anywhere.

Obstacles faced

Because of overloading of project server of the Government, we find it very difficult to process the application of the students for scholarship. Secondly, many of the students do not avail the opportunity of getting scholarship because of their ignorance about the scholarship or non availability of required documents.

Impact of the practice

The poor students who could not afford to get to higher education because of financial burdens are now feel free and capable of getting higher education in the college. Mostly the girl-students who were not sent to the college are also able to get themselves admitted to the college. Poor parents who once upon a time get their daughters married off before reaching to the college now feel comfortable to send their girl child to the college.  The socially backward class of people are sending more and more of their wards to the higher education because of Government’s scholarship and financial help.

A few staffs are still not very much acquainted with the computerization system and find themselves unable to cope with the operation of the most of the tools.

In spite of all the obstacles, digitalization of the office work has helped the management in a very remarkable extent. We are now processing many of documents related to pension, salary bill, provident fund loans, pay fixation of staff, arrear claim, student related data, admission, examination, student progression, AISHE, University, Department of Higher Education, Govt. of West Bengal, and many more. The use of emails has reduced drastically the time involved in communication with government offices and others. We are well connected with the teachers and students through bulk SMS, official facebook page and college website. The cashless transactions with students has removed many of the hurdles and the difficulties of cash counting and its record keeping. It has also reduced the burden of risk of cash holding and transferring to the banks.
